Cleaning and Disinfection
Every
healthcare facility needs to have well-documented protocols as a guide to
routine cleaning and guarantee that the process meets the expected standard.
Similarly, the staff must adhere to the agreed protocols and have the necessary
equipment and resources to achieve the set standard. While the prevailing
COVID-19 pandemic has popularized handwashing, Cleaning and Disinfection, they
are conventional practices in the medical field. Staff is advised to use
suitable personal protective equipment to prevent infection and stick to the
cleaning protocols.
Cleaning
Cleaning with detergent and warm water, as a process, helps in removing visible
dirt and contaminants. The process is typically effective in decontaminating
both the environment and equipment. However, in some given situations, cleaning
alone may not be sufficient.
Disinfection
As a process, disinfection lowers the number of or eliminates poisonous
microorganisms that threaten clients' or patients' well-being. It is more
effective when the equipment or surfaces have been cleaned thoroughly using
water and detergent. After cleaning, one disinfects using 0.1% solution of
chlorine releasing agent. However, for the agent to kill viruses and bacteria,
its use should be per the manufacturer's directions.
Enhanced Cleaning
Amid an infectious outbreak or an extraordinary increase in the prevalence of a
specific microorganism, enhanced routine cleaning is highly recommended. It
involves the cleaning and disinfection of the surrounding, including frequently
touched surfaces, such as microbiology tests kits, sinks, chairs, push plates,
and handles. Depending on the outbreak's nature, some areas may require regular
Cleaning and Disinfection, such as laboratory and sanitary areas.
Terminal Cleaning
Terminal cleaning involves Cleaning and Disinfection of surfaces, equipment, and floors within a department or the whole facility. It may be due to increased incidence or a case of an outbreak. After discussion with the infection control and prevention team and managers responsible for the facility, terminal cleaning may be sanctioned.
